My novel, "The Abyss of St. Marie" is free to download March 6 - 10.
In a nation resembling 18th century Europe, St. Marie is called "The City of Dreams." But for the elven population, it's a nightmare, as they are forced to live in a shantytown and good jobs are hard to come by.
Tyler Stanford is a human instructor in a magic university. He sympathizes with the elves' plight but would rather not get involved in politics. He resists as his on-again-off-again girlfriend tries to pull him in one direction while his new lover pulls him in the other. But with the school headmaster acting on his own prejudices, Tyler may soon have to pick a side whether he wants to or not.
Sal is an elf who's moved to St. Marie to turn over a new leaf after a life on the run. Her job as a barmaid helps her get by - not that her live-in boyfriend appreciates it, and serving drinks to humans is more of a chore than it has to be. She's unsure how much longer she can continue an honest life until a chance meeting with Father Rik, a priest who's become quite the celebrity as he preaches the virtue of civil rights. Sal thinks his vision of peaceful coexistence is a pipe dream, but there is something compelling about Rik that makes her want to help him.
Alternatively serious and whimsical, "The Abyss of St. Marie" is a brisk read that you won't soon forget!
