Howard Allen Frances O'Brien Rice
pen names: Anne Rice, Anne Rampling, and A. N. Roquelaure
born New Orleans, Louisiana: 4 October 1941
died Rancho Mirage, California: 11 December 2021
Anne Rice was an American author of fantasy (particularly gothic horror romance fiction), erotic literature, and Christian or Bible fiction.
She is best known as the author of the very long Vampire Chronicles series, beginning with Interview with the Vampire (1986), which was adapted into a commercially successful film in 1994.
Her other works are less SFF and more erotic fiction. Her erotic novel Exit to Eden (1985) was also made in a film in 1994.
In her Sleeping Beauty series, begging with The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty (1983) Beauty is awakened after her 100-year sleep and taken by her Prince to a school of buttock spanking.
Her Ramses the Damned series, beginning with The Mummy, or Ramses the Damned (1989), concern the erotic desires of the ancient Egyptian when awakened from suspended animation.
In her The Mayfair Witches Saga, beginning with The Witching Hour (1990) are horror/dark fantasy with strong religious themes. This series has been continued with her son, Christopher Rice.
She published the historical Christian fiction novels: Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt (2005), and the sequel Christ the Lord: The Road to Cana (2008).
She then had a public falling out with the Catholic church and returned to writing further books in her Vampire Chronicles series: Prince Lestat (2014), Prince Lestat and the Realms of Atlantis (2016) and Blood Communion: A Tale of Prince Lestat (2018). Since these produce a kind of Vampire ‘origin story’ they might be considered the most SFF of all of her works.
