born New York, New York: 15 January 1935

Robert Silverberg is an American author of science fiction and fantasy, as novels and short stories, and he was an editor of anthologies. He was the author of more than 1000 stories, of a large number of non-fiction books, and edited about 70 anthologies.

His first published story was Gorgon Planet (1954) in Nebula Science Fiction.

He wrote numerous novels, including an estimated 200 erotic ones, and many under unknown pseudonyms. His first novel was a YA book, Revolt on Alpha C (1955).

One of his few fantasies was the Majipoor series, beginning with: Lord Valentine's Castle (1980), The Desert of Stolen Dreams (1981) and Valentine Pontifex (1983), a planetary romance.

Other notable works are: the novellas, Nightwings (1969), Born with the Dead (1975) Sailing to Byzantium (1985), Gilgamesh in the Outback (1987), and Enter a Soldier. Later: Enter Another (1990); the novels, Passengers (1969) and A Time of Changes (1971), and the short story, Good News from the Vatican (1971).

He is another of the authors whose work has frequently appeared in the queries in our SFF Chronicles Book Search forum, an indication that it is remembered with some fondness.

A list of his works is to be found here: Summary Bibliography: Robert Silverberg

I only ever read a couple of Silverberg, Kingdom of the Wall and Star of Gypsies. I thoroughly enjoyed both of them and cannot think of a single reason why I haven’t read more of his work. A superb author..

Not all collected editions, but this lot collects everything that has been collected (if that makes sense)

And, downloaded from a pulp magazine website, all but 15 of the 170 (I think) short stories that were only published in magazine format (and never published in book format).

But none of the erotic stuff.

These seem to be approximately in chronological order (?) My favorites are generally in the top half of the second panel.
