The following descriptions are in order, but only a small part of a larger work that I read some years ago. I have searched for this book for some time.
A troupe of "humans" traveling through a forest or jungle. Each, large male has a pair of attendent females. The females take turns being pregnant. The female not pregnant services the less evolved male when he becomes preoptic. This all happens while walking, and the male does not appear to pay much attention to the process.
The second vignette;
Non of the characters are fully developed.
A village.
Males comes of age, start traveling and learning skills. When they reach a given age or skill level, they seek to settle down.
Males can only settle in a village within a monogamous relationship with a female in the village.
When the male comes to the village, the available females, if they so choose, display themselves and their skills. If the male and female agree, they go into a "cave" and consummate the arrangement. Males are not always able to do whatever it is they do in the cave, and the female has to assist in some way. I don't remember that it is ever made clear what they are doing.
The particular male in the vignette is a little older than is typical, but has good skills, fire starter or like that if I remember, and the village needs someone with these skill. The male does not like the females available, and is getting ready to move on when one of the younger females, without asking permission, displays herself and the pair go into the "cave."
The make a successful whatever, the vignette ends, and the book moves on to the next topic.
Anybody identify this book?
Thanks in advance.
